We shall not underestimate the power that Business-driven Enterprise Architects |or| Product & Process Owners |or| Application Specialists (can) bring to the table for making the live of workers more meaningful.

In the age of Cloud Computing and Composable Architectures - the new digital age - and in the age of Autonomy and Empowerment, Purpose-Driven Work, Lifelong Learning and Growth, Flat Hierarchies - the New Work age - we NEED those people with a growth mindset and leadership capabilities that stand close to the business.


As a digital leader the whole company, its partners and supply chain, is your playing ground.

We are not here to keep the system up and running, we are here to digitally transform the company into a success, where business people love to come and work with the Cloud tools that we (together) selected and made available.

Not because these tools are the right ones to do their work (collaboratively) but what we did / what we do is remove organizational barriers and obstacles while implementing them in the long run giving people meaning in what they are doing.

Really with the right culture, mindset and leadership attitude we can make anything possible.

Cloud ERP – de Kansen, de Uitdagingen & het bereik van SAP

De laatste jaren maken Cloud ERP platformen een geweldige groei door. Als één van de grootste aanbieders in het Cloud ERP domein geeft SAP in dit artikel "Cloud ERP – Opportunities, Challenges & SAP’s Outreach" een interessante inkijk in de wereld van Cloud ERP oplossingen:

SAP schetst de kansen die Cloud ERP platformen bieden en de uitdagingen die de Cloud met zich meebrengt maar ook de initiatieven die SAP voor klanten in petto heeft om adoptie te vereenvoudigen.


Cloud ERP biedt tal van voordelen, maar brengt ook uitdagingen met zich mee waarmee bedrijven rekening moeten houden.

De grootste uitdagingen zijn:

  • Integratie met andere oplossingen zowel onpremise als in de Cloud
  • Gegevensbeveiliging en privacy: de aanbieder moet voldoen aan relevante wetgeving en normen, en adequate maatregelen treffen om gegevens te beschermen tegen inbreuken en cyberaanvallen
  • Verandermanagement is nodig om de transitie bij belanghebbenden en medewerkers soepel te laten verlopen

De adoptie van Cloud-ERP vereist een mentaliteitsverandering in directiekamers van bedrijven, een complete bedrijfstransformatie is nodig om de echte vruchten van de Cloud te plukken.

Immers niet alles wat in een on-premise systeem op maat gemaakt is, kan eenvoudig worden gerealiseerd. De gang naar een Cloud-ERP kan aangegrepen worden als een kans om processen te herzien, opnieuw te ontwerpen en om obstakels en drempels in de organisatie te elimineren.


Upgrade van onpremise naar de Cloud volgens een lift-and-shift benadering is uit den boze

Upgraden van onpremise naar de Cloud is uit den boze want bedrijven zullen dan lang niet / helemaal niet de uitzonderlijke mogelijkheden gaan benutten die de Cloud brengt.

Niet alleen nieuwe technologieën vinden via Cloud Enterprise Platformen versneld hun weg vinden naar vooruitstrevende bedrijven. Maar deze bedrijven zien ook elk kwartaal / half jaar nieuwe applicaties, functionaliteiten, nieuwe processen en integraties met andere platformen verschijnen. De gang naar de Cloud maakt voor hen de belofte meer dan waar.

Leiders van bedrijven willen vandaag sneller kunnen anticiperen op veranderingen in hun omgeving, klanten blijven verrassen door betere service, grip krijgen op toeleveringsketens, voldoen aan toenemende duurzaamheidsverplichtingen en hun groei versnellen.

Valt er wat de kiezen voor bedrijven? Zeker de keuze is reuze maar bedrijven moeten bereid zijn de ontdekkingsreis aan te gaan.

Cloud oplossingen maken een compliance-gerichte groei van bedrijven mogelijk

Help, waar blijft die oplossing voor de uitdagingen van mijn afdeling?

Managers, u zult het wel herkennen.

U gaat naar de IT manager om een oplossing te vinden voor de grootste pijnpunten van uw medewerkers.

Weken later, na herhaaldelijke verzoeken, werpt u een balletje op bij de CFO, die u - hoe kan het anders - doorverwijst naar IT.

En dan heeft één van uw medewerkers een (semi) gratis "Cloud Service" gevonden. U kent ze wel: Trello, Monday, Jira, Alumio, Tray, Zendesk, ... .

Tijdens strategische organisatieassessments kom ik ze regelmatig tegen bij bedrijven.

Ongemerkt (vanuit Portfolio Management 'ongewild') naar binnengeslopen zorgen ze voor irritatie bij de IT afdeling.

Ze worden oogluikend toegestaan maar brengen grote uitdagingen mee:

☛ Kosten lopen uit de hand terwijl ze niet 'ten volle benut' worden benut

☛ Passen niet in het bestaande applicatie-landschap en zijn niet geïntegreerd met formele oplossingen

☛ Bevorderen data-silo's, die bedrijven afremmen om hun doelen te bereiken, ze belemmeren samenwerking en vertekenen het beeld van de status van het bedrijf

Deze toename van Cloud Services binnen bedrijven kent een aantal oorzaken:

☛ er is geen of nauwelijks ondersteuning voor de digitale uitdagingen van afdelingen en de business

☛ er is geen beleid m.b.t. wie bevoegd is om Cloud Services aan te implementeren / aan te schaffen

☛ formele tools zijn het domein van IT die helaas steeds vaker buiten spel gezet wordt door een kosten-gedreven financiële manager die afdelingen verantwoordelijk houdt voor hun prestaties en processen

☛ de focus van de traditionele IT manager (en de financiële manager) is op de on-premise oplossingen die volledig onder controle hebben

BEDRIJVEN MOETEN VERANDEREN OM TE GROEIEN.

Financiële directeuren worden de komende jaren geconfronteerd met een toename aan compliance-vereisten:

🍀 hervorming van het BTW-stelsel met verplichting tot grensoverschrijdend elektronisch factureren (ViDA | 2025 -2028)

🍀 verplichting om te rapporteren over duurzaamheidsinspanningen (sociale en milieuaspecten) (CSRD | 2024 - 2026)

🍀 hervorming van de Douane-Unie (vanaf begin 2028)

🍀 ... en meer is op komst


Cloud-oplossingen (niet Cloud Services) zijn de drivers voor groei en bedrijfstransformatie, zij geven medewerkers toegang tot nieuwe technologieën zoals AI, ML, Process Mining & Automation.

Twee belangrijke zaken moeten gebeuren:

☛ Ontwerpen van een toekomstig landschap gericht op het voldoen aan de wensen van de organisatie & partners en voldoen aan compliance-vereisten

☛ Ontwerpen van een IT-afdeling voor de digitale toekomst: technologie-, data-, proces- en vooral business gedreven

How do Single- and Multi-Tenancy, Cloud-Native and Born in the Cloud differ!

You probably wonder why I am assembling this overview of definitions. Now the explanation is very simple, lately I have been reading the latest publication / report from Gartner about "Cloud ERP for Product-Centric Enterprises". [Gartner: see references]

A lot of terms are used in the report that made me doubt if I really understood these concepts properly.

Multi-Tenant versus Single-Tenant

☛ What is Multi-Tenant Architecture? [Datamation: see references]

Multi-tenant architecture, commonly referred to as multitenancy, is a software architecture in which multiple single instances of software run on a single physical server.

The server then serves multiple tenants.

Additionally, multitenant architecture is used to enable multiple users to use a single application, for instance a database.

“Tenants” is a term for a group of users or software applications that all share access to the hardware through the underlying software.

Multiple tenants on a server all share the memory, which is dynamically allocated and cleaned up as needed. They also share access to system resources, such as the network controller.

This is the opposite of single-tenancy, in which the server runs one instance of the operating system and one application.

Multi-tenant architecture’s core advantage is that it allows exponentially more use from a single hardware or software platform.

What Is The Difference Between Single And Multi-Tenant?

Single-tenancy is largely seen as the “deluxe” option, in that a client operates in a solely dedicated environment.

In a multi-tenant environment, each customer shares the software application along with a single database, so multiple people from the same company can access the database.

Still, even in multi-tenant, each tenant is isolated from other tenants.

☛ WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE: SINGLE TENANT VS MULTI-TENANT [Digital Guardian: see references]

Single Tenant

A single instance of the software and supporting infrastructure serve a single customer. With single tenancy, each customer has his or her own independent database and instance of the software. Essentially, there is no sharing happening with this option.

Multi-Tenantancy

Multi-tenancy means that a single instance of the software and its supporting infrastructure serves multiple customers. Each customer shares the software application and also shares a single database. Each tenant’s data is isolated and remains invisible to other tenants.

Today we’ll break down the differences between single tenant vs multi tenant architectures.

The main difference between them is that these software applications can serve either one or more customers at the same time.

Single Tenant Architecture

Single tenant architecture uses a software application and a database for each tenant (client).

What this means is that clients can’t share the database or application between them, because all of them have their own instances of database and applications.

We’ll try to explain how the single tenant structure system works by providing you with the real estate example, which should be easy enough to understand.

Imagine that every client has its very own office building.

All these buildings are located on the same street. The street represents the same server from which all the SaaS clients operate.

Every client runs its operations from within their buildings. The buildings are lined-up next to each other on the street.

Multi Tenant Architecture

We’ll use the same descriptive method of the above real estate example for multi tenant architecture.

Multi tenant architecture can be described as the environment in which clients are offices, but, in this case, all of the offices (clients) are located within the same building.

Every client works from its own space within a large SaaS software product, making it much more comfortable and more accessible in some cases.

The multi tenant approach models are divided into:

  • Logical Data Separation is a model that allows all tenants the possibility to utilize only one database. All of their data is securely separated within the same database by implementing unique identifiers for every client. The codebase is responsible for retrieving and storing the data via this unique identifier.
  • Physical Data Separation is another model that will successfully separate the data by utilizing different databases for different clients (tenants). Doing so helps people scale the application following the client’s growth and will also scale the application according to the clients’ needs.
  • Cloud-Native versus Born in the cloud

    Let's start with a simple definition:

    "Cloud-native architecture and technologies are an approach to designing, constructing, and operating workloads that are built in the cloud and take full advantage of the cloud computing model."

    The Cloud Native Computing Foundation provides the official definition [CNCF: see references]

    "Cloud-native technologies empower organizations to build and run scalable applications in modern, dynamic environments such as public, private, and hybrid clouds. Containers, service meshes, microservices, immutable infrastructure, and declarative APIs exemplify this approach.

    These techniques enable loosely coupled systems that are resilient, manageable, and observable. Combined with robust automation, they allow engineers to make high-impact changes frequently and predictably with minimal toil."

    The pillars of cloud native

    The speed and agility of cloud native derive from many factors. Foremost is cloud infrastructure.

    But there's more: Five other foundational pillars shown in Figure 1-3 also provide the bedrock for cloud-native systems.

    Microservices

    Cloud-native systems embrace microservices, a popular architectural style for constructing modern applications.

    Built as a distributed set of small, independent services that interact through a shared fabric, microservices share the following characteristics:

  • Each implements a specific business capability within a larger domain context.
  • Each is developed autonomously and can be deployed independently.
  • Each is self-contained encapsulating its own data storage technology, dependencies, and programming platform.
  • Each runs in its own process and communicates with others using standard communication protocols such as HTTP/HTTPS, gRPC, WebSockets, or AMQP.
  • They compose together to form an application.
  • Figure 1-4 contrasts a monolithic application approach with a microservices approach. Note how the monolith is composed of a layered architecture, which executes in a single process. It typically consumes a relational database.

    The microservice approach, however, segregates functionality into independent services, each with its own logic, state, and data. Each microservice hosts its own datastore.

    ☛ What is cloud native? The modern way to develop software [InfoWorld: see references]

    Cloud-native definition

    Cloud-native is a modern approach to building and running software applications that exploits the flexibility, scalability, and resilience of cloud computing. Cloud-native encompasses the various tools and techniques used by software developers today to build applications for the public cloud, as opposed to traditional architectures suited to an on-premises data center.

    The cloud-native approach to building and running software was pioneered by a group of companies commonly referred to as “born in the cloud” — such as streaming giants Netflix and Spotify, ride-hailing company Uber, and accommodation booking platform Airbnb. The cloud-native approach has since been adopted by other companies looking for similar digital agility and disruptive competitive advantage.

    The Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) defines cloud-native a little more narrowly, focusing on application containerization — where applications are broken down into microservices and packaged in lightweight containers to be deployed and orchestrated across a variety of servers.

    In the CNCF’s own words: “Cloud-native technologies empower organizations to build and run scalable applications in modern, dynamic environments such as public, private, and hybrid clouds.”

    Cloud-native app development typically includes marrying microservices, cloud platforms, containers, Kubernetes, immutable infrastructure, declarative APIs, and continuous delivery technology with techniques like devops and agile methodology.

    ☛ Cloud-Based, Cloud-Native, and Cloud-Enabled Applications — What fits your business? [ISHIR: see references]

    Cloud-native application: Cloud-native applications are architected for the public cloud. Due to being designed specifically for the cloud, it can harness the full power of cloud using cloud-based technologies. These are made on the microservice architecture and comprise continuous integration, container engines, and orchestrators, making them highly flexible and scalable.

    Cloud-enabled application: Cloud-enabled application is any traditional app developed in a legacy system and then upgraded to work in the cloud. These apps were initially intended to operate on-premise, with local resources and hardware, but later migrated to the cloud, where they use the virtual resources and inherent capabilities of the cloud to gain the cloud advantage.

    Cloud-based application: Cloud-based apps serve as a hybrid – the best balance between cloud-native and cloud-enabled. A cloud-based application doesn’t need infrastructure upgrades, but it also doesn’t run to the fullest power like a cloud-native app. Essentially, it leverages the capabilities and resources of the cloud to run the app without the need for a complete overhaul.

    Are you ready for a tailored ERP approach on Salesforce Lightning?

    Large ERP suites repeatedly fail to deliver to expectations leading to huge cost overruns and disappointments.

    Many companies are reluctant to start their second-time (or third) ERP project and continue struggling. Implementation of ERP, almost always, boils down to "projects limited by technology". While companies only want to automate their business processes, information house-keeping and interactions with upstream and downstream supply chain partners.

    Nowadays companies look for alternative agile approaches to shape their business information systems landscape.

    One such approach is best-of-breed.

    But, an on-premise best-of-breed approach is not a viable option. It requires a strong integration platform and a huge degree of openness of involved applications.

    Integration-in-the-Cloud, on the other hand, is a lot easier. A best-of-breed approach using solutions available on the Force.com platform can be done smoothly.

    Some best-of-breed already working combinations are: Rootstock - FinancialForce and Propel PLM / Rootstock and SalesForce CRM.

    I believe that the 'customer-to-customer' processes of a manufacturing company can easily be automated with a best-of-breed approach. Best-of-breed becomes a simple configuration act - in the same way that we configure a bike using the best components available.

    Bent u klaar voor een op maat gesneden aanpak van ERP op Salesforce Lightning?

    Uitgebreide ERP-suites maken herhaaldelijk de verwachtingen niet waar en leiden tot enorme kostenoverschrijdingen en teleurstellingen.

    Veel bedrijven zijn daarom terughoudend in het starten van hun tweede-generatie (of derde) ERP-project en blijven worstelen met hun legacy-omgeving. Implementatie van ERP komt, bijna altijd, neer op "projecten beperkt door technologie". Terwijl bedrijven alleen hun bedrijfsprocessen, informatiehuishouding en interacties met upstream- en downstream ketenpartners willen automatiseren.

    Tegenwoordig zoeken bedrijven naar alternatieve wendbare benaderingen om hun landschap van bedrijfsinformatiesystemen vorm te geven.

    Een dergelijke aanpak is de best-of-breed.

    Echter, een on-premise best-of-breed-aanpak is geen haalbare optie. Het vereist een sterk integratieplatform en een grote mate van openheid van de betrokken applicaties.

    Integratie-in-de-Cloud, daarentegen, is een stuk eenvoudiger. Een best-of-breed aanpak met oplossingen beschikbaar op het Force.com platform kan soepel en vlot ingericht worden.

    Sommige reeds operationele best-of-breed combinaties zijn: Rootstock - FinancialForce en PropelPLM / Rootstock en SalesForce CRM.

    Ik denk dat de ‘klant-tot-klant’ processen van menig productiebedrijf gemakkelijk kunnen worden geautomatiseerd met een best-of-breed aanpak. Best-of-breed wordt dan een gewone configuratie activiteit zoals het configureren van een fiets met behulp van de beste componenten die beschikbaar zijn.

    End of September 2009 SAP Research in Brisbane, Australia and SAP Netweaver Development presented SAP Gravity, a Business Processing Modeling Tool for Google Wave. SAP Gravity is a prototype providing real-time, cloud-based collaborative business process modeling within Google Wave.

    Google Wave is Google’s new real-time collaboration platform that combines features of e-mail, social networking, wikis and instant messaging in one integrated browser-based client. Google Wave offers rich developer APIs to extend the core functionality with custom components.

    SAP Gravity has been embedded as a Google Wave “gadget” that can be added within the Google Wave client. Leveraging the collaborative features of Google Wave, all business process modeling activities get propagated in near real-time to all other participants of the Wave. In addition, participants of the Wave can use all other features provided by Google and its developer community to enrich the collaborative modeling experience.

    Meanwhile SAP is integrating the Gravity prototype into SAP StreamWork.

    SAP Research RoofTop Marketplace
    A new kind of Web-based application, known as Enterprise Mashups, has gained momentum in the last years: Business users with no or limited programming skills are empowered to leverage in a collaborative manner user friendly building blocks and to combine and reuse existing Web-based resources within minutes to new value added applications in order to solve an individual and ad-hoc business problem.

    SAP Research St. Gallen in Switzerland build the SAP Research RoofTop Marketplace prototype as part of their participation in the European Framework Programme 7 project Fast Morfeo. FAST aims at providing an innovative visual programming environment that will facilitate the development of next-generation composite user interfaces. It constitutes a novel approach to application composition and business process definition from a top-down user-centric perspective.

    The SAP Research RoofTop Marketplace prototype is a Web-based application based on AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) that demonstrates the power of Mashups and presents an intuitive environment to create Enterprise Mashups without any programming skills.

    SAP launched the beta release of StreamWork in February 2010 under the codename 12Sprints and managed to attract the attention of some well-known providers of web-based on-demand solutions, such as Box.net, Evernote and Scribd. These companies teamed up with SAP and embraced the software’s open architecture. They established integration with their solutions within a few weeks time.

    - Box.net
    Box.net, based in Palo Alto, California, was founded on a simple, powerful idea: people should be able to access and share their content from anywhere.

    The Box’s cloud content management platform makes it simple for businesses to share, access and manage content online. The integration with SAP StreamWork enables users to easily add their Box content, such as research reports, marketing and creative assets, or project plans to an SAP StreamWork activity, so that relevant content can be present in the decision-making process.

    Additionally SAP StreamWork users can also create Box folders directly within SAP StreamWork and associate them with a specific activity.

    The integration with SAP StreamWork demonstrates - is another example of - how the cloud continues to be a viable platform for businesses of all sizes, said Karen Appleton, vice president of business development at Box.net.

    Scribd is headquartered in San Francisco, California, and launched in 2007. Meanwhile Scribd became the largest social publishing and reading site in the world.

    On Scribd, people can easily turn any file - such as PDF, Word and PowerPoint - into a web document and immediately connect with passionate readers and information-seekers on the thriving community, through connected sites such as Facebook or Twitter and search engines such as Google.

    Scribd has contributed document reader technology to SAP StreamWork allowing users to read documents in formats such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel directly within the SAP StreamWork environment, without having to download or open the file in a new window. “Integrating Scribd technology into SAP StreamWork gives people access to all of the documentation they need to make informed decisions,” said Jared Friedman, CTO and co-founder, Scribd.
